“The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.” -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

You work hard, you watch calories, you run, jump, do aerobics and do your best to keep from "giving in" to your cravings. It would mean you've fallen off the proverbial weight loss horse, and that you've failed. I beg to differ ...

I think a reward is a powerful thing. It motivates you to stay the course, it provides a small amount of cheating in a calorie counting world, and gives you the slight satisfaction of curbing a craving. Without rewards, what are you working for? Do you want to go the rest of your life never having ate a piece of chocolate, or indulged in a decedant dessert? That's just ridiculous. When you make the effort to change your life, eat right, exercise regularly, and just be in better overall health, it's important to keep living. You want to find that happy balance between new healthy life, and not so healthy life. You can't just completely cut-off one, and think you have the faith or discipline to NEVER think of snack food again. That's just ridiculous ... too.

So my theme this week is how to reward yourself, keep your spirit up, and make sure that you aren't going "without" enough that you don't find yourself gorging at the fridge at midnight. Happy balance, that's what we want here. It's a scary idea, though, right? How much can I eat, what can I eat, when can I eat? I see a Dietician regularly and she makes sure I'm "rewarding" myself when I can. Of course the idea of a reward isn't blowing through an entire bag of Cheetos in one night. That's being a fattie with no control, and we're not those type of girls ;) A reward is in moderation, it's a handful of those Cheetos when you're watching TV at night, or a fruit smoothie after that hellacious workout. It's making sure you aren't going without. Do you pass on that ice cream trip with the family? Hell no, you just make sure when you get there that you eat out of a cup, and go light or fruit friendly ... sans the toppings, sorry! Going out for a night with girl friends? Worried what that drinking will do to the waistline? Fear not, have a glass of water after every glass of what you like, and you'll find yourself backing out on that extra glass before you leave, problem solved :)

See, this is a life style change, it's making things work FOR you instead of laying the guilt AGAINST you. Guilt leads to turning down the rewards, then you feel bitter, you lose your spirit ... and everyone pays for it in the end. So use moderation, use those brains I know you have, think about what you're putting in your mouth, and just make sure you don't go without!!

It's 7:25pm, and I don't have all the images from the girls as of yet, but I will post the ones I do have. So here goes, and make sure to leave some love!!

>> UPDATE << It's 1:55pm and I just added both myself and Alexis :) Still waiting on Adrian, Emily & Mistie :)

  1. So I am down 10.4 lbs total since we started 2 weeks ago. I set my sight on a "5" as my middle digit, and totally did it and as such I am rewarding myself for my first of many 10 lbs lost with a manicure :). After the first 10% I am getting a professional deep tissue massage. I like the idea of rewarding myself, and I am trying to find balance in my life. As today is my birthday and i know I want to have a slice of cake, I worked out for an extra 15 minutes (150 calories) on the elliptical. This will allow me to have my slice of angel food cake with fresh strawberries and 2tbsp of whipped topping without feeling guilty. This weekend was easier than last. Still more difficult than any given week day, but better. I am doing alternating calorie days to keep my body confused. (Biggest Loser tip from Jillian Michaels). That helps. I try to plan it so that my saturday is my higher calorie day (higher being 1500-1650 calorie--still with a heavy workout), but I am trying to make sure those extra 250 calories go towards healthy choices not just peanutbutter cups :). As for goals for this week--they arent centered on a number since I dont want to get too scale obsessed. I want to jog 3 miles on the treadmill in under 36 minutes. I want to go to a hot yoga and a body pump class in addition to the 5 cardio days I have planned. I also want to come up with a reward system for pounds lost. And if I lose a pound or two...awesome :).

  2. As of 5:30 this morning, I am at 289 lbs. This makes me smile because I know I have worked my ass off (literally) to lose those 10 lbs! :D My mother claims that I have lost weight in my face and my butt. And my boobs look better. LOL As she says, "You've lost buttage! And your boobs.....they're looking, um...better!" I can't see any changes in myself but I can feel them starting. My legs and arms feel stronger and I am really feeling the muscles in my back. In a good way! My clothes are also getting a little more loose. Yesterday, I went to get changed and pulled my pants down, thinking I was still wearing my sweats. Well, I wasn't. I was wearing my jeans and they just slid down my legs like they weren't held up too well. My reward for the 10 lb weight loss is to go shopping for one new pair of jeans.

As for keeping myself in between uber-strict eating habits and stuffing my face, every few nights I indulge in a single-serving ice cream from Wal-Mart. They have all kinds of flavors, they range from 200-320 calories and they are only $1. Those days, I make sure to cut out a few calories from my meals and snacks during the day, or do a little extra cardio at the gym and I'm good to go for my ice cream at night. Right now I'm about to go fetch a caramel one. All in all, I'm quite proud of myself which is not something I have been able to say for some time.

Keep up the AMAZING work ladies!!!

  4. Wow just wow ladies!! down 10 lbs!! Soo proud of you two!!

Me, I'm down a total of 3 lbs... Not ideal but with my crappy knee I can't do as aggressive as I'd like to do. I do walk 2 miles a day with my boys and am starting to Water aerobics 2 times a week where with this instructor she calculated it and I'm burning in excess of 500 calories in an hour!
I think I'm going to go by measurements. I measured the fattest part of me around my belly button and it was at 45" so.... We'll go from there I don't quite know what's achievable as far as how to set goals any thoughts?
I was doing 1000 calories but found out I was starving my self so I've brought it up to 1200-1400 depending on what I plan on doing during the day.
My Jean size is a size 16 now, I dream of a 10 but will flipping jump up and down at a 12 and when I'm that size my fat should stop jumping when I do LOL.

  9. Wow you ladies are kicking butt!!! I have lost 1 lb this week, I however have horrible eating habits and I desperately need to get it under control.

I am doing lots of walking daily, I do my squats, squat kicks, crunches and such. I am one of those gals that was not given the pleasure on knowing what it was like to have a round butt, so my squats are what I need to do in order to get some butt lol. I too am over the pound numbers its more of when I walk nothing should jiggle and I know that some find it hard to believe but my belly is not anywhere near toned as some seemed to have thought. I am very fluffy soft and it moves when I walk and I am ashamed of that, I can deal with the stretchmarks as I have had them for 17 years now.

I am going to do my best in making better snack choices and out comes the bottles of water, more more more water is what I need.

Congrats to all of you in your weight loss, sticking to diet, and giving it your all! Keep up the good work!
